BBC Look North Harry Gration’s son Harvey follows in father’s footsteps with marathon challenge

The son of BBC legend Harry Gration will run the Yorkshire Marathon after starting his running training with his late father.
Harvey Gration will head to York this October in memory of his father and to raise money for Myeloma UK.

Harvey said: “Full of cherished and loving memories of my Dad, the BBC broadcaster, Harry Gration MBE, I’ll be running the Yorkshire marathon this October. Being an experienced runner but never having ran such a distance before, I’ll be proudly following in his footsteps as I embark on this challenge to honour him and raise money for Myeloma UK.

“A charity close to my father’s heart, and one he supported because he also had this cancer in his later years, anything you can give will be so much appreciated- so thank you.”

York is the centre of the 26.2 mile route, a city where the Grations lived as a family and where his Dad ran the inaugural Yorkshire Marathon,  as well as the London marathon in years gone by.

Harvey said: “I’ve got to do this, the marathon, out of respect for all my dad’s incredible challenges.

“I started my training with him really, when we’d run together around the Knavesmire in York, until my Dad told me to ‘clear off’, I was too fast! Dad started off the first York Marathon 10 years ago, so I’m doing this one, with my family there – my little brother Hammie, my Mum, Harrison my twin, who’ll probably sing opera at me to get me to run faster.
“It’s something I need to do to be part of Dad. It’ll be emotional yes. But it will be so special for me to do it. I’m fundraising too for Myeloma, as Dad developed that cancer in his later years and we know how painful it was for him.”
Harvey’s mother and Harry’s wife Helen said: “Harvey is a very determined young man – can’t think where that came from.
“He’s absolutely ready for this Marathon and wants to do his dad proud. He already has of course.
“It’s so important for the boys to channel some of the challenges of losing their Dad unexpectedly, into something so positive and so fitting. Just as we were there to cheer on Harry, so we will be there to cheer on Harvey. He’s amazing and I love him to bits.”

Harvey added: “He is a tough act to follow, but he will be pushing me on I know, and I look forward to sharing a special moment with the people of Yorkshire who knew him best and most lovingly.”
